Does your homeowner’s policy cover your college student?

Most policies will cover your full-time student if they were a resident of your household just prior to moving out to attend college. Most homeowner policies cover a college student’s belongings while located in a dorm room, up to 10% of the insurance amount covering the parent’s personal property. For example if the parents personal property limit is $150,000 then the student would have a limit up to $15,000.

Should I purchase a floater policy?

Electronics such as computer and laptops are covered under a homeowner policy but would be subject to the deductible, which is usually $1,000. You may consider adding a floater for such items as laptops, computers, and bikes, specialty items needed for the students major that would be subject to little or no deductible.

Liability coverage?

If your college student is covered by the parents’ homeowner policy then the policy will generally cover the student for any liability losses that occur for injuries or damages they may cause to others while at school.

If your student takes a car to school, can they remain on your auto policy?

Full-time college students can usually remain covered on their parents' auto policy if their primary address is the parents' house, even if they attend college out of state. If the student owns their own car, they will have to have their own auto policy.
