If you’ve ever worked a Friday night rush, you know how fast things can move. You also know how quickly something small can turn into something big.

I grew up working in my family’s pizzeria, so I’ve lived that life. Long hours, tight margins, managing staff, taking care of customers. It’s not just a business. It’s personal. That’s why, today, as a commercial insurance advisor, I work with restaurant owners across Virginia to help them navigate their restaurant insurance and protect what they’ve built.

Whether you’re running a family-owned restaurant, managing a franchise location, or growing into multiple locations, here are a few things I often see restaurant owners overlook when it comes to their insurance.

1. When Was the Last Time You Reviewed Your Coverage?

A lot of restaurant owners set up a policy once and don’t revisit it for years. The problem is your business doesn’t stay the same.

Costs have gone up. Equipment is more expensive. Build-outs cost more. If your property values haven’t been updated recently, you may not have enough coverage to fully recover after a loss.

It’s worth having your policy reviewed to make sure it reflects what it would cost to rebuild or replace everything today, not five or ten years ago. This is something I regularly walk through with restaurant owners throughout Virginia.

2. Water Backup and Equipment Coverage Matter More Than You Think

I’ve seen it happen. One backup or one equipment failure can force a restaurant to pause operations.

Two areas I always review:

Water backup coverage. This isn’t always included and can leave a significant gap.

Equipment breakdown. Your kitchen depends on specialized equipment. If it goes down, your revenue can be impacted.

For many restaurants, these coverages play an important role in keeping operations moving after an unexpected issue, especially in high-demand markets like Roanoke, Lynchburg, and surrounding areas.

3. Don’t Overlook Furniture, Fixtures, and Build-Out Costs

Think about everything inside your space. Tables, chairs, bar setups, custom finishes. These add up quickly.

With rising costs, replacing those items is more expensive than it used to be. If your limits haven’t been adjusted, it could be harder to get back up and running the way you expect after a loss.

This is a common gap I see in both independent restaurants and franchise locations.

4. EPLI: Protecting Your Team and Your Business

This is one many owners don’t think about until a situation comes up.

Employment practices liability coverage, or EPLI, can help address claims involving issues like harassment or discrimination. In the restaurant environment, with late hours and frequent staff changes, it’s something worth considering as part of your overall coverage.

It can apply to employee-related claims and certain situations involving customers.

At the end of the day, it’s about protecting your team, your customers, and your business reputation.

5. Cyber Coverage Is Becoming More Relevant

Restaurants today are more connected than ever.

Your POS system is tied into payment processing, online ordering, loyalty programs, and cloud-based systems.

If something is compromised, it can interrupt operations and potentially expose sensitive information. Cyber coverage is often overlooked, but it’s becoming an important part of many restaurant insurance programs across Virginia.

6. Fire Coverage Still Deserves Close Attention

Fire risk remains one of the most significant exposures for restaurants.

Between open flames, grease, and high-heat equipment, it’s important to understand how your policy responds to building damage, equipment loss, and business interruption.

Coverage details can vary, and those differences matter when you’re working to recover from a loss.

Let’s Take a Look at Your Coverage

I’ve spent over 20 years around the restaurant business, so I understand how much you’re juggling every day.

If your policy hasn’t been reviewed recently, this is a good time to take another look. I’d be glad to review your coverage with you and help make sure your restaurant insurance still fits your operation today.
