Flanigan-Leavitt’s history began in 1882 when Murray Insurance Agency was founded by John R. Murray. John left his native Nova Scotia for San Francisco, California, in 1875 when he was 24 years old. Two years after moving to San Francisco, he moved to Greenville, California, where he worked as a bookkeeper in a general store. He later became a storekeeper, a pharmacist, and then an insurance agent.
After founding Murray Insurance Agency in 1882, John continued to manage and grow the business until 1920 when he turned it over to his son and the second generation of ownership, Kenneth B. Murray. Kenneth managed the agency for 31 years, from 1920 to 1951. When he retired, the third generation of Murrays took over. Kenneth’s sons John, Robert, and Vadney Murray operated the agency as partners for many years and expanded into Susanville and Westwood. The original agency in Greenville was sadly destroyed by fire.
In the early 1980’s, the Murray’s partnered with Plumas General Insurance in Quincy, California, forming Murray & Edwards Insurance Agency.
The agency’s current owners, Michael and Valerie Flanigan, began working at Murray & Edwards on July 1, 1995. In 2000 they purchased 5% interest in the agency. On July 1, 2003, Michael and Valerie purchased full interest in Murray and Edwards and affiliated with Leavitt Group, forming Flanigan-Leavitt Insurance. The agency now has 11 employees and two office locations – Quincy, CA, and Reno, NV.
Flanigan-Leavitt has a rich history of family ownership, community service, and taking care of the insurance needs of their local communities.
Congratulations to Flanigan-Leavitt on 140 years in insurance!
