Cyberattacks are no longer rare events: they’re a daily risk for businesses of every size. Whether it’s a phishing email that compromises employee data, a ransomware attack that locks down your systems, or a data breach that triggers costly notification requirements, the fallout can be swift and expensive.

That’s where cyber insurance comes in. With the right coverage, your business can recover faster, limit financial loss, and protect your reputation when digital threats become real.

Here’s a breakdown of the core coverages and why they matter.

What Does Cyber Insurance Cover?

  1. Privacy and Security Liability
If sensitive employee or customer information is stolen, leaked, or mishandled, your business could be held responsible. This coverage helps pay for legal defense, settlements, and regulatory fines associated with compromised data, whether the breach was due to a hack or internal error.
  2. Crisis Management & Data Recovery
When a breach happens, time is everything. This coverage can help you:
  • Restore lost or corrupted data
  • Hire IT forensics and breach response teams
  • Launch public relations efforts to repair your reputation
  • Notify affected customers, as required by law (sometimes within 72 hours)
  1. Business Interruption & Lost Income

Cyberattacks can take your systems offline, halting sales, communication, or operations altogether. This coverage can help reimburse:

  • Lost revenue due to downtime
  • Costs to repair or rebuild systems
  • Expenses tied to a third-party service provider’s failure (like a web host or cloud platform)
  1. Cyber Extortion (Ransomware)

Ransomware attacks have exploded in recent years. If cybercriminals lock your systems and demand payment, this coverage can help:

  • Pay the ransom or settlement, if necessary
  • Cover the costs of hiring cybersecurity experts
  • Investigate the attack and prevent further damage
  1. Media & Web Content Liability

If your website or digital ads unintentionally infringe on someone else’s intellectual property or contain libelous or misleading content, this coverage protects you from lawsuits tied to:

  • Copyright or trademark infringement
  • Defamation or slander
  • Content posted by employees or third-party vendors

Real Talk: Cyber Risks Are Everywhere

  • 78% of small businesses reported at least one cyber incident in the past 12 months.
  • The average cost of a data breach in the U.S. reached $9.48 million in 2023
  • Ransomware attacks now account for nearly 25% of all data breaches—and they’re getting more targeted

What You Can Do Today To Prevent Cyberattacks

Cyber insurance is a critical piece of the puzzle—but it’s even more effective when paired with strong internal safeguards. Here are a few things you can do right now to lower your risk:

  • Back up your data regularly (and test your backups!)
  • Store critical backups off-site or in the cloud
  • Use multi-factor authentication (especially for email and financial logins)
  • Run antivirus and anti-malware scans
  • Install automatic software updates
  • Create a written data breach response plan
  • Train your employees on how to spot phishing attempts

Find Peace of Mind in a Digital World

A cyberattack doesn’t have to shut you down. With the right insurance policy and an insurance plan in place, you can minimize the damage, recover quickly, and continue doing what you do best.

As the director of commercial operations at Leavitt Group Texas Select, I’m responsible for developing our commercial insurance team and overseeing account management, support, and talent acquisition. One of the best parts of my job is helping my team reach group goals by taking an encouraging and supportive approach.

I started in the insurance industry in 1998 as a captive agent with Nationwide Insurance, where I built an agency from scratch. In 2020, I transitioned my agency to become independent, and in 2022, I joined forces with Leavitt Group Texas Select.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration from Stephen F. Austin State University and continue to educate myself in subjects relevant to my career. I’ve earned my Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF) designation and am a member of several professional organizations, including the Independent Insurance Agents of Houston and Texas, Professional Insurance Agents of Texas, and the Houston Builders Association.

My wife, Felecia, and I have been married for 37 years. We have two sons, Tucker and Austin, a daughter-in-law, Karly, and recently welcomed our first grandchild, Jenna Grace. I enjoy spending time with my family, especially now that our children are adults.

Outside of work, I am very involved with my church, Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, and currently serve on the Investment Committee, as well as act as a board member of the Holy Spirit Episcopal School. I have a weekend hobby farm on 10 acres in La Grange, Texas, that I love working on. It’s nice spending time outdoors, whether it's cutting down and processing trees, tending to my small garden, or working with the two steers I keep on the property. Additionally, I perform regularly as Elvis for the elderly, typically for those suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia.
