Congratulations to Tom Sokol, First Independent Agency, who received the Capitol Award at the Big I Michigan 2026 Convention and Trade Show. Tom was joined at the event by employees Susanna Sokol, Amy Stabnick, and Kira Roxy, among over 500 independent agents and carriers in attendance.
This award recognizes outstanding service and achievement in furthering the political and advocacy goals of the Big I Michigan. It honors an individual who has dedicated time, energy, and leadership to protecting the independent agency system through grassroots involvement and legislative engagement — someone who has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to ensuring the voices of independent agents are heard.
When presenting the award, Big I Michigan CEO Jared Burkhart shared, “Through ongoing involvement, relationship building, and a willingness to step forward when it matters, Tom has helped influence the legislative process in meaningful ways. It is not just about the laws that get passed but also the bad ideas that never see the light of day. His efforts have positively impacted independent agencies across Michigan.”
Tom shared some thoughts with us on his work and what this recognition means to him.
How did you first get involved with Big I Michigan?
Prior to affiliating with Leavitt Group I was active politically. I was aware of the work the Big I did for our industry. I joined and started attending events. I got involved with the legislative committee and then they asked me to join the board. I am a board member representing District 1. I am elected by our members. I am also on the legislative committee.
What motivated you to take on a leadership role in this space?
I wanted to be in leadership to leverage my political relationships for the work I do outside of our agency in our community and state. I wanted to help impact legislation to protect our industry.
What does your day-to-day involvement with the Big I look like?
I attend quarterly board meetings, committee meetings, and other industry related events. On a day-to-day basis, I may be fielding questions from members, meeting with DIFS, helping solve issues for members, or calling/recruiting new members. I’m always advocating for our industry and organization. We also do a lot of benchmarking and best practice sharing.
What advice would you give to other agents who want to get involved in advocacy?
Treat it like voting in a general election. Don’t count on someone else to take care of it for you. Your voice matters, your donations matter, and most importantly you as an expert in your field matters and brings impact. Your legislators want to hear from you because you are the backbone of this country.
